Ridlon is known for his experimentation with a variety of mediums, believing mixed media experiences always result in new insights. Discovering new ways of combining materials and ideas has always been one of his primary concerns.

Ridlon finds the most exciting aspect of working with mixed media materials is that each new combination leads to a different aesthetic outcome.

Dark Thoughts

Dark Thoughts

These are early mixed media works in which found materials are used to create collages that explore past memories.

Response Prints

Response Prints

The response prints were done in editions of 12 and then each print was reworked as an individual work of art. The plate was used as a finished work of art after the final printing.

Entropy

Entropy

This series of mixed media works, measuring 24" x 36," explores the ways in which things disintegrate, dissolve, and change over time.

Landscapes

Landscapes

Painting fields and woods around the Cazenovia, NY area has created experiences for me that were full of wonder, spirit and amazement. Several series of small underglazed acrylic paintings represent months of exploring the wild in order to gather insights into the colors, moods and spirit of the woods and fields during seasonal shifts. These paintings allowed me to record glimpses of seasonal color plays and atmospheric shifts in the landscape. All of these paintings were used as research for the more fully realized large collage paintings that followed.

Football Studies

Football Studies

These are small - 8" x 10" - collages capturing aspects of the game of football that served as studies for larger paintings.

Muse Series

Muse Series

The pieces comprising "Muse Series" are small (8" x 10") mixed media collages that are reinterpretations of sketches of the Italian and French countrysides.

Mysterious Gardens

Mysterious Gardens

The summer 2023 series "Mysterious Gardens" of mixed media paintings resulted from revisiting gardens that have weathered the punishment of neglect. Memories and old photographs were the motivation and reference for these paintings.

Gardens Remembered

Gardens Remembered

This series of paintings, Gardens Remembered, were developed over several seasons and in different settings. First, a collage was developed from memory of specific garden highlights. Some of those collages were then painted over to reflect the garden as it is viewed currently.
